WASHINGTON — A new pizza that includes a vegan crust and vegan cheese is hitting stores this week, sparking outrage over the use of animal ingredients.
The pizza, called Shakeys Pizza, is billed as “made with 100% plant-based ingredients” and comes in vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free versions.
The New York Times described the pizza as “a vegan, dairy-free, egg-free and low-fat pizza.”
The product has been around for a few years now, and the ingredients are the same as the one that’s been on Shakeys menu for years.
In its description, the Times wrote that the pizza “has a healthy and delicious crust that is super-easy to roll and the cheese is made with 100 percent plant- based ingredients, including cashews, soy, cashews from Brazil and sunflower seeds.”
The Times added that the vegan crust is made from flax seed, hemp seeds, hemp, almonds, cashew, pecans and sunflowers, which are vegan and have no animal ingredients, making them 100 percent vegan.
The Times noted that the “vegan” crust has “a cheesy and delicious cheesy crust that will melt in your mouth.”
The pizza has also been available in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and New York, but the Times did not say if the pizza is available in other cities.
The Times described Shakeys as “one of the only vegan pizza places in New England,” and it’s a “great place to try out the vegan pizza.”
Shakeys, which was founded by the vegan activist, Matt Kremper, is known for serving a vegetarian version of the pizza called Vegan Pizza.
A similar product was also on Shakeyys menu in 2016, and a vegan version of Shakeys pizza was sold in the United Kingdom last year.
The vegan pizza on Shakeies menu has “vegetarian and gluten free” on the box, and it is also sold at Shakeys restaurants in Chicago, Boston, New York and Washington, D.C.
